                                         Message from the Rabbi -

As I write this article for the Shofar, the Winter Solstice has descended. The shortest day of the year has arrived. We all have to cope with fewer hours of daylight and outdoor activities, the warmth of sunshine and late evening walks around the neighborhood. But I know of a place where the light is bright, a place where there are activities that can stimulate your mind, your body and your soul. A place that is filled with the warmth of human kindness. A place to grow, a place to relax, a place to stretch your imagination, a place to share your thoughts with others, a place that can transport you to another time and another space without leaving your chair. Yes, you can take part in this exciting armchair adventure, by joining me, your friends and neighbors at Friday night Shabbat Services and Saturday mornings for “Around the Rabbi’s Table”. In January, we begin a new and exciting series of films and discussions about “How  the Jews Invented Hollywood”. The true story of how a group of young Jewish immigrant  men left the shtetis and ghettos of Eastern Europe to come to America, The Goldena Medina,  The Land of Gold, to find their fame and fortune. And in the process of reinventing themselves,  they redefined America and the American Dream.

So let in the light of Hollywood films, let in the warmth of Temple Beth Sholom friendship and  hospitality (coffee, cake, fruit and friends) and let your mind wander to another Jewish time and  another Jewish place, as we enter, “an Empire of Their Own” the world of Jewish Hollywood. Join me for Part I of our Jewish Film Festival, “From Peddlers to Producers”.

It all starts on Saturday, January  9th , at 9:30 AM in our Social Hall. Come down and share your  Love of Jewish Learning with us and bask in the warmth and light of Jewish Education.
